Tax Bracket Calculator

Tax brackets scare folk. This tool shows yours with a simple table and the tax at each step.

I kept the brackets simple so you can see how the math works line by line.

$
10% band (first $11,600.00)$1,160.00
12% band (first $47,150.00)$4,266.00
22% band (first $70,000.00)$5,027.00
Total estimated tax$10,453.00
Your top bracket22%
Real average rate on all income14.93%

US style federal bands for 2025, for learning. State tax and credits come on top. Check your tax office for your exact case.

How to use this tool

  • 1Your income gets split in to bands.
  • 2Each band has its own rate. The tool adds the tax from each band.
  • 3Only the top slice of your pay sits in your top bracket.

The math behind it

Tax per band = (band top - band bottom) x band rate, stacked

Say the first 10,000 has no tax and the next band takes 12 percent.

Earn 15,000 and you owe 600, only on the slice above 10,000.

Who this tool is for

I watch which tools folk open most, and this one gets used by the same kinds of people again and again. If any of these sound like you, you are in the right place.

  • Any one who heard the bracket myth
  • Folk planing a big earn year
  • Curious minds who want to see the bands line by line

The best money argument I ever ended was about brackets. A pal turned down a raise because it would put him in a higher band and, he said, cost him money. We ran this sum. The raise won. He still brings it up, but he brings it up with more cash.

Tips from me

  • Type your own bands from your tax office sheet. Rates move most years.
  • A raise never taxes your whole income at the top rate. Only the top slice climbs.
  • Use the last dollar idea. It tells you if extra work really pays.

Mistakes I see with this sum

These are the three slips I made my self or watch folk make most. Skip them and your number will be closer to the truth on the first try.

  1. 1Thinking one dollar over a line taxes ALL your pay. Only the top slice moves.
  2. 2Using single bands when married bands apply. They are very different.
  3. 3Forgetting the deduction before the bands start.

Two words worth knowing

Marginal rate

The rate on your top slice of pay only.

Effective rate

Your whole tax bill as one percent of all income.

That is the whole page. The tool does the math, and the words above give it a shape. If a number still looks odd, change an input and watch what moves. Playing with the boxes taught me more than any guide did.

Common questions

+Does a raise push ALL my pay to a higher tax rate?

No. This is the big myth. Only the part above the band line gets the higher rate.

+Are these the real tax rates?

They are close single filer style bands for learning. Check your tax office for your exact bands each year.

+What is a tax bracket?

A range of income taxed at one rate. Your income fills the low bands first, then climbs.

+Do brackets punish raises?

No. Only the dollars above each line pay the higher rate. Every raise still leaves you with more net.

+Where do I find my bands?

Your national tax office publishes them each year. Type them in here and the rest is arithmetic.
