Tax Calculator
This is my plain tax math tool. One amount, one rate, one clear answer.
Use it for any quick tax sum before you open the bigger tools. It can add tax on to a price or strip it back out.
How to use this tool
- 1Amount times tax rate gives the tax.
- 2Add the tax to the amount for the total.
- 3If your amount already holds tax, pick that mode and the tool works back to the net.
The math behind it
Tax = amount x tax rate
A 500 invoice at a 20 percent rate carries 100 in tax.
The clean total to charge is 600.
Who this tool is for
I watch which tools folk open most, and this one gets used by the same kinds of people again and again. If any of these sound like you, you are in the right place.
- Shoppers checking a price with tax on top
- Freelancers adding tax to an invoice
- Any one who needs a plain percent sum fast
This is the oldest tool on the site and still the one I use most. Buying gear for a side job, checking an invoice, quick sums at a market stall. One amount, one rate, done. Fancy tools are for big questions. This one is for the small ones that come at you sideways.
Tips from me
- Know if your rate is already inside the price or on top. Both exist and they mix people up.
- Keep tax money in a second pot if you are self employed. Future you will smile.
- Run the sum before you quote a price, not after.
Mistakes I see with this sum
These are the three slips I made my self or watch folk make most. Skip them and your number will be closer to the truth on the first try.
- 1Typing the total in the before tax box. Pick the right mode or the sum flips.
- 2Using a national rate when your city adds its own bit on top.
- 3Forgetting quantity on multi item buys. Small tax times ten is not small.
Two words worth knowing
Net
The price before tax joins in.
Gross
The full price with tax already in it.
That is the whole page. The tool does the math, and the words above give it a shape. If a number still looks odd, change an input and watch what moves. Playing with the boxes taught me more than any guide did.
Common questions
+Can I use this for any tax?
Yes. It is a plain percent sum. Sales tax, service tax or any flat rate tax works.
+Does it handle tax brackets?
No. For a bracket view use my tax bracket tool. This one is for flat rates.
+Is this tool for any country?
Yes. The math is universal. Type your own rate and it works for your rules.
+What is the difference with sales tax?
Not much at this size. Sales tax is added at the till. VAT and GST are usually inside the shown price.
+Why does my real tax bill differ?
Real bills stack many rules, bands and reliefs. This tool gives the clean flat sum for one number.
