Savings Calculator
A save goal without a plan is just a wish. This tool turns your target in to a monthly sum.
Pick your mode, type your numbers and see the path to your goal.
Type your accounts rate, like 4, to see the boost it adds.
The model adds your save each month and grows the pot at your rate. Real rates move, so treat the date as a guide.
How to use this tool
- 1Goal minus what you have gives the sum still to save.
- 2That sum split by your monthly save gives the months.
- 3Months split by 12 shows the years.
The math behind it
Time to goal = goal amount / monthly saving
A 6,000 emergency fund at 250 a month lands in 24 months.
Bump it to 400 a month and you are there in 15.
Who this tool is for
I watch which tools folk open most, and this one gets used by the same kinds of people again and again. If any of these sound like you, you are in the right place.
- Folk with a goal and no date for it
- Savers choosing between two monthly sums
- Any one building an emergency cushion
My first save goal was 10,000 with no plan, which is a wish with a costume on. The tool said 300 a month would take me past three years. That hurt. So I moved the goal to 1,000 first. The date did the motivating. Dates always do.
Tips from me
- Name the goal. A pot called trip saves faster than a pot called savings.
- Automate the monthly move on pay day. Willpower is a bad bank.
- Park it where it is a day away, not a tap away. Friction protects goals.
Mistakes I see with this sum
These are the three slips I made my self or watch folk make most. Skip them and your number will be closer to the truth on the first try.
- 1Setting a goal so big it never starts. Shrink it until it starts.
- 2Forgetting the bank rate box. Free months are free.
- 3Saving with out a name on the goal. Named money sticks better.
Two words worth knowing
Goal date
The month your pot crosses the line.
APY
The rate your bank pays in a year, with compounding in it.
That is the whole page. The tool does the math, and the words above give it a shape. If a number still looks odd, change an input and watch what moves. Playing with the boxes taught me more than any guide did.
Common questions
+How can I hit my goal faster?
Three levers. Save more each month, cut the goal, or earn a bit more. Any one of them moves the date.
+Should I save or pay down what I owe first?
Most folk do both. A small save cushion for bad days, then more to the debt with the highest rate.
+How big should my emergency fund be?
Three months of costs is the base, six is calm. Use my expense calculator for your true monthly number.
+Where should savings sit?
A boring, safe, reachable account for the buffer. Longer goals can sit in slightly better paying spots.
+What if I can only save 25 a month?
Start there. The habit is the asset. Raise it with every raise and the curve bends up.
