Monthly Budget Calculator

This tool adds up your month in one place. Income in, costs out, and the honest left over sum.

When I first did this sum by hand I found 90 dollars of leaks. You may find some too.

Total income$4,200.00
Total costs$3,000.00
Left over before savings$1,200.00
Left after your save target$900.00
Save target as percent of income7.14%
Left over per year$10,800.00

Aim to move that save sum out on pay day so it does not get spent.

How to use this tool

  • 1All your cost boxes add up to total costs.
  • 2Income minus costs gives your monthly left over.
  • 3Times 12 shows what that means in a year.

The math behind it

Monthly plan = monthly take home - fixed costs - variable costs - savings

Take home 2,800. Rent and bills take 1,400, food and fun take 900.

That leaves 500 to send to savings on pay day.

Who this tool is for

I watch which tools folk open most, and this one gets used by the same kinds of people again and again. If any of these sound like you, you are in the right place.

  • Couples merging incomes and bills in one view
  • Folk who budget by feel and want the truth
  • Any one planing a save goal against real life

The first time I filled every box in this tool, the left over row showed 90 dollars, not the 400 in my head. Nine bucks here, a plan there, a snack on the way home. I did not panic. I just started moving the small leaks, one a week. That is the whole method.

Tips from me

  • List fixed costs first. They are the floor you cannot move this month.
  • Check subscriptions last month's statement. The dead ones always wave from there.
  • Plan savings as a fixed cost, paid first. Leftover saving never happens.

Mistakes I see with this sum

These are the three slips I made my self or watch folk make most. Skip them and your number will be closer to the truth on the first try.

  1. 1Leaving out the odd costs. Life stuff shows up every month if you are honest.
  2. 2Budgeting a perfect month with no fun line. Perfect plans break in week two.
  3. 3Not checking the plan mid month. Three minutes is all it takes.

Two words worth knowing

Left over

Income minus all costs, before saving.

Zero based budget

A plan where every dollar has a job, even fun.

That is the whole page. The tool does the math, and the words above give it a shape. If a number still looks odd, change an input and watch what moves. Playing with the boxes taught me more than any guide did.

Common questions

+What if my left over is zero?

Then your budget is balanced but not growing. Track every spend for a month to find leaks to cut.

+How often should I redo my budget?

I redo mine when pay or rent moves. For most folk that is one or two times a year.

+Where does the monthly take home come from?

Your last payslip, net sum. If your pay moves, use the average of the last three months.

+How much should savings be?

Five to twenty percent of take home is the honest band. Start at five and climb as leaks close.

+What about weeks with five weekends?

Keep the monthly plan steady and let the fat weeks feed a buffer pot. Calm beats precision.
