Bonus Calculator

A big bonus looks great on paper. Tax takes a bite first. This tool shows both sums.

Know the real number before you plan what to do with it.

My rule is save a slice first, then enjoy the rest with no guilt.

$

Add your salary to see the bonus as a percent of pay.

Bonus before tax$5,000.00
Tax on bonus$1,100.00
Bonus you keep$3,900.00
Save slice$1,170.00
Spend slice$2,730.00

How to use this tool

  • 1Bonus times your tax rate gives the tax bite.
  • 2Bonus minus tax gives the sum you keep.
  • 3Use the rate from your pay slip or bonus letter for best match.

The math behind it

Bonus = salary x bonus percent

A 60,000 salary with a 10 percent bonus target means 6,000.

At a 22 percent tax rate, about 4,680 lands in your account.

Who this tool is for

I watch which tools folk open most, and this one gets used by the same kinds of people again and again. If any of these sound like you, you are in the right place.

  • Folk expecting a bonus and planing with it
  • Any one deciding between save and spend on a windfall
  • Job candidates weighing a bonus heavy offer

My biggest ever bonus arrived and I planned a very big month. Then the tax man took his slice and the month shrank fast. Now I run the after tax sum before I dream, and I save a third of any bonus before it touches my spending account. The dreams got smaller, the savings got real.

Tips from me

  • Plan to save half of any bonus before it lands. Bonuses feel like free cash and vanish like it.
  • Check if your bonus is guaranteed or at will. The word matters.
  • Big bonus years can bump your tax bracket. Ask before you spend.

Mistakes I see with this sum

These are the three slips I made my self or watch folk make most. Skip them and your number will be closer to the truth on the first try.

  1. 1Spending the gross number in your head. Tax comes first, always.
  2. 2Assuming the bonus rate matches your pay rate. Bonus holds can differ.
  3. 3Counting a bonus before it is paid. Offers and years change.

Two words worth knowing

Withholding

Tax held back from the payment up front.

Windfall

Money that arrives out side your normal pay.

That is the whole page. The tool does the math, and the words above give it a shape. If a number still looks odd, change an input and watch what moves. Playing with the boxes taught me more than any guide did.

Common questions

+Why is bonus tax so high sometimes?

Some places hold back a flat high rate on bonus pay. You may get some back at tax time.

+What should I do with a bonus?

My rule is simple. Save a part, enjoy a part. Even a small save habit turns a bonus in to a cushion.

+Why is my bonus taxed so hard?

Many employers hold a flat high rate on bonuses. Some of it comes back at tax time. It feels harsh and mostly evens out.

+Is a bonus guaranteed?

Only if your contract says so. Words like target or at will mean the firm can skip it.

+Should I put my bonus in a work plan?

Pre tax plans can soften the tax hit. Rules vary by plan and country, so check yours first.
